                  Abstract:Core - wallconstructionofagravellysoilrockfilldamincoldregionusuallyfacesthefreeze - thawchal
                  lenge.Incurrentpractice ,itiscommontocoversoilwiththermalinsulationmaterialtopreventcorewallfrom
                  freezing.However,thereleaseandreclaim processofthermalinsulationmaterialeasilyinterferethecore - wall
                  compactionprocess ,whichwouldreducetheeffectiveconstructiontime.Basedontheheatstorage?releaseproperty
                  ofphasechangematerial (PCM),thispaperdevelopedaphasechangematerialincorporatedintogravellysoil
                  (PCM- GS)toimprovetheanti - freezingperformanceinacoldperiod.Theengineeringcharacteristicsandanti -
                  freezingperformanceofPCM- GSwasanalyzedthroughpermeability ,unconfinedcompression,triaxialcompres
                  sion ,hotdiskandtemperaturecontroltests.Theresultsindicatethattheunconfinedcompressivestrength,shear
                  strengthandimpermeabilityofPCM- GSaresignificantlyhigherthanthoseofthegravellysoilwithoutPCM.The
                  thermalconductivityandspecificheatofPCM- GSdecreasewithPCM content.Accordingtothetemperature
                  controltest ,afiniteelementsimulationmodelofheattransferwithPCM- GSwasverifiedundercore - wallconstruc
                  tionconditions.Theanti - freezingperformanceofPCM- GSduringwinterconstructionwasanalyzedunderdifferent
                  ambientairtemperatures(minimumtemperaturesare- 5℃,- 8℃ and- 10℃,respectively).Thesimulation
                  resultshowsthatthePCM- GSat6% PCM contentisabletopreventsoilfromfreezingwhentheminimumambient
                  temperatureis - 5℃.ThecombinationofincreasingtheinitialtemperatureofPCM - GSandcoveringanupperlayer
                  assuresthecontinuouscore - wallconstructionwithhighefficiencywhenminimum ambienttemperatureis- 10℃.
                  ComparedwithgravellysoilwithoutPCM,thePCM- GSextendtheconstructiontimeforcore - wallcompactionin
                  winter ,whichoffersapotentialalternativetoimprovetheanti - freezingperformanceofPCM - GSduringwintercon
                  struction.
