Abstract:ThefluctuationofwaterlevelsintheThreeGorgesReservoircancauseinstabilityinreservoirbanks,
resultingintheformationoflandslidesandsurgingwavedisasters.Inthispaper,theHeishibanlandslideinthe
ThreeGorgesReservoirareaisselectedastheresearchobjectbasedontheanalysisofmonitoringdataspanningover
adecade ,whichisobservedasahydrodynamicpressure - triggeredlandslide.Rainfallhasacertainboostingeffect
onthedeformationofthelandslideonlyduringtheperiodsofreservoirwaterleveldeclineandlowwaterlevelfluctu
ations ,whileithaslittleimpactonthelandslidedeformationatothertimes.Byanalyzingthesix - stepdeformation
inthecumulativedisplacementcurve ,thethresholdfortriggeringlandslidestepdeformationwasdeterminedwhen
thereservoirwaterleveldropsto165m.Thislevelwassetastheinitialwaterlevelheightfornumericalsimulation ,
correspondingtothemostdangeroussituationofthelandslide.Surgewavecalculationandpredictionwereconduc
tedusingFLOW- 3Dsoftware.Atawaterlevelof165m ,themaximum velocityoflandslideentryintothewater
was19.4m?s,themaximum waveheightgeneratedbythesurgewavewas24.9m,andthemaximum run - up
reached42.21m.Accordingtothepredictionresults ,thesurgewavesgeneratedafterthedestructionoftheHeishi
banlandslidewillinundatepartsoftheareasofShuitianbatownanddestroythemainroadsintothetown ,signifi
cantlyaffectingrescueeffortsinShuitianbatown.Thisstudyprovidesascientificbasisfortheriskmanagementof
reservoirbanklandslidesurgewavesintheThreeGorgesReservoirareaandhascertainengineeringpracticalsignif
icance.
